Jewelry is my self-expression tool. It is my way of communicating. It's where I can be free. My jewels are the result of a long creative process influenced by everything that surrounds me, from everyday life to personal experiences. A subway trip, a strange lighting coming through my window, other artists in New York ... everything inspires me. I enjoy breaking down concepts until they become minimalist pieces with a strong meaning. It is in my studio where I can express myself with my own voice. It is my favorite place. My playground. My corner of the world where I can break the rules.
I am also a violinist, a profession that I developed together with musical and art teaching in Wetherby-Pembridge school NYC. Previously, I dedicated myself to interdisciplinary shows production. I have always lived surrounded by art and artists. When I was little I was very creative. I enjoyed creating playdough cities in the lid of the bucket toys, discovering that a cereal box was much more than that. For me, art is a lifestyle and everything has the potential to be art.
THE BRAND: ANH JEWELRY
ANH Jewelry is a sustainable jewelry brand by Alba Navarro Hierro, created halfway between Barcelona and New York. The company was founded in 2016 in Brooklyn, where the artist has her studio. LITTLE CLIMBERS COLLECTION
It’s about YOU
You that fight for love,
You that dream awake,
You that smile.
You that speak for your rights,
You that stay strong,
You that dance.
You that fell and get up,
You that scream in silence,
You that climb.
Together, We are the change:
Little Voices, Little Fighters, Little Lovers, Little Dreamers,
This poem expresses Little Climbers collection’s essence. The idea that small people together carrying out positive attitudes can move the world.
From a very young age, Alba had the idea of creating an artistic project with tiny human figures. Figures that climbed up the human body itself, the same way is done in the tradition of Els Castellers, an ancient tradition very popular in the town where she was born. The name Little Climbers arose when later the artist decided to undertake the project. She was explaining it to her partner and he replied: "yeah, like little climbers?" Immediately, she knew that would be the collection’s name.
To put her vision into practice, she locked himself in the studio in order to design the jewels that make up the collection. At the beginning, she created different shapes and sizes molds. The creative project led her to the investigation of the human body and its movements in climbing. She drew sketches of human figures in a notebook and then she sculpted them in wax, which would later become metal (gold and silver).
The collection that emerged from the creative process presents a series of pieces that are variations of movements and postures of small climbers. Each action corresponds to a positive movement or attitude such as Resistance, Hug, Meditation, Fighter, Dreamer or Lovers. The essence of the collection sums up: small people with positive attitudes who try to do good things to improve the world.
Little Climbers is not just jewelry. It is a calling for support among people to build the personal and the collective, following the inspiration of the human towers, Els Castellers. This tradition is very popular in some regions of Catalonia, where different bands, called colles, compete to see who can build the tallest human tower. The space that each individual occupies in the group is important in order to transform the individual into a collective.
As a matter of fact, as a young person she participated in that tradition playing the gralla -a musical instrument- because the construction of the towers is performed together with live music. Many of her friends from the city were part of the colles castelleres. That influence was essential when she develop the concept. Els Castellers represent unity, support and teamwork. Cooperation is essential to achieve the ultimate goal. The pieces of the collection convey this attitude of mutual help when dealing with life. To achieve everybody’s dreams, we require the support of others.
The pieces convey ethical meaning: jewels give you identity. You are wearing either a feeling, an emotion, an idea or a purpose. In Alba’s own words: “my goal in creating this personalized jewels is that they become a kind of amulet that reminds your challenges as a human and your place in the world, how much we can achieve when we climb together”. The result of the collection’s creative process is the merger of Alba’s roots and the new experiences at her new home, Brooklyn, using her pieces as a way to express herself.
Little Climbers creative process does not end with the realization of the jewels. The photographs shooting was essential to convey the message. The artist gathered her creative team and explained the idea to them. Immediately, they became excited. During the photo session there were nine people from different backgrounds and seven different languages were spoken: "the shooting was in some way the same concept of “unity from different” I want to convey, we are individuals who together can do great things", explains Alba. "It is also the essence of a diverse city like New York where you meet people who came here to achieve their dreams.
In this second collection, the artist has evolved creating her pieces in a more conceptual and less decorative way, thus establishing the kind of artist she is. In her point of view, the message that a jewel conveys is as important as the beauty of the piece. In Little Climbers there is content, a meaning beyond the ornament; It is an attitude and there is a story behind the creation of the pieces. In the words of the artist: "For me it was important to express my core principles and my voice in the pieces, which was not simply to wear a jewel but an intention".
WHEN JEWELRY MEETS ART COLLECTION
When Jewelry Meets Art was born from a commission that Alba received from another artist who had designed the postcards that accompany Alba's jewelry. In return, the artist asked her to design a ring with the Basquiat’s Crown. From there, Alba was inspired to recreate pieces of paintings by famous artists. The collection consists of 13 gold-plated pieces that reproduce extracts from paintings by different well-known painters. For instance, besides Basquiat’s Crown ring, you can buy a piece with a Picasso’s face, a necklace with Salvador Dalí’s eye, a ring with Joan Miró’s star or the Keith Haring’s heart.
Alba’s work has been featured both in press and in fashion magazines. Her pieces have appeared in Vogue Spain, Elle Spain, El Periódico, D'scene Magazine, Officiel Mexico, Harper's Bazaar Serbia, Glamor Spain and Design Dcene
